12x30 vs 12x36 Album: Which Size Should You Choose?
12x36 and 12x30 are the two most common panoramic album sizes offered by Indian studios and labs. Both are 12 inches tall; the difference is the width of the open spread. Choosing between them affects the look of the album, the price and how you design each page.
The basic numbers
- 12x36: each closed page is 12x18 inches, the open spread is 36 inches wide. At 300 DPI a sheet is 10800 x 3600 pixels.
- 12x30: each closed page is 12x15 inches, the open spread is 30 inches wide. At 300 DPI a sheet is 9000 x 3600 pixels.
The 12x36 spread has a 3:1 aspect ratio; 12x30 is 2.5:1. That difference changes how layouts fit.
How the album looks and feels
A 12x36 album feels grand and cinematic when opened, and it gives more room for a wide hero photo plus several supporting images. It is also larger and heavier to hold. A 12x30 album is a little more compact and easier to handle, and the slightly taller proportion suits portrait-oriented photos better.
Cost
Pricing is set by each lab, but because a 12x30 sheet uses less paper than a 12x36 sheet, many labs price 12x30 albums lower for the same number of sheets. If a client's budget is tight, offering 12x30 with the same number of sheets is often better than cutting sheets from a 12x36 album. Ask your lab for its current rate card for both sizes; we do not publish prices because they vary widely by lab, paper and binding.
Designing for each size
Do not stretch or squash a 12x36 layout to make it fit 12x30. Circles become ovals and photos look distorted. Either use templates built at the right proportions or resize the canvas properly. Our 12x30 album PSD collection contains sheets built at true 12x30 proportions, and the 12x36 collection covers the larger format.
If you must convert a design, change the canvas size (Image > Canvas Size) rather than the image size, then rearrange frames and backgrounds to fill the new width. Our guide on resizing album PSDs to another size explains the method.
Which photos suit which size?
- Lots of wide group photos and landscapes: 12x36 gives them room.
- Mostly vertical portraits: 12x30's taller ratio wastes less space.
- Many small candid photos per spread: 12x36 allows a cleaner row of frames.
- A minimal album with one image per page: either works; 12x30 is often more economical.
What clients usually choose
In practice, many Indian couples ask for 12x36 because it is the familiar 'Karizma album' size, while 12x30 is popular for budget packages, parent albums and smaller events such as engagements and birthdays. Showing both sizes as physical samples in the studio makes the choice easy for clients.
Quick recommendation
Offer 12x36 as the main wedding album and 12x30 as the value option or for secondary albums. Keep separate template folders for each size so you never accidentally design on the wrong canvas, and confirm the size with the lab's order form before exporting.
