How to Edit a Wedding Album PSD in Photoshop (Step-by-Step)

A wedding album PSD template saves hours, but only if you know how it is built. This guide walks through editing a typical 12x36 album sheet in Adobe Photoshop, from opening the file to exporting a print-ready JPG, with the habits that keep album work fast and error-free.

1. Check the document before you touch anything

Open the PSD and press Ctrl+Alt+I (Image Size). Note the width, height and resolution. A 12x36 inch sheet at 300 DPI is 10800 x 3600 pixels; at 200 DPI it is 7200 x 2400. Compare this with what your lab asks for. If the lab wants 12x36 at 300 DPI and the file is smaller, decide now whether to work at the template's size or resize the canvas, because resizing after you place photos softens everything.

Next, turn on View > Rulers and drag a vertical guide to the exact centre (18 inches on a 36 inch sheet). That is the fold. Also add guides about 0.25 inch inside every edge to mark the safe area. Faces, names and dates must stay inside these guides.

2. Understand the layer structure

Good templates group their layers: photo frames, decorations, text and background. Open the Layers panel and expand the groups. A photo frame is usually a shape or a filled layer named something like 'Photo 1' or 'Place image here'. Your photo will be clipped into that shape, so it only shows inside the frame.

If a template is a single flattened layer, it is not really editable; pick a different design. Every file on PSD Album is layered, and the design page lists the canvas size, DPI and file size before you download.

3. Place and clip your photos

  • Select the frame layer in the Layers panel.
  • Use File > Place Embedded to bring in your photo. It lands directly above the selected layer.
  • Press Alt+Ctrl+G (Option+Cmd+G on Mac) to create a clipping mask. The photo now shows only inside the frame.
  • Press Ctrl+T, hold Shift if your version needs it, and scale the photo so the subject fills the frame without cutting off heads or hands.

Placing photos as Smart Objects (Place Embedded does this) means you can resize them many times without losing quality. Avoid scaling a photo above 100% of its original size; if a frame is too large for your photo, choose a different frame or a different photo.

4. Edit text without breaking the layout

Double-click the T thumbnail of a text layer to select its text and type the couple's names, the date and the venue. If the template uses a font you do not have, Photoshop shows a warning; replace it with a similar font from your system and keep one font pair across the whole album. Check every spelling with the client; names and dates are the first thing families notice.

5. Recolour decorations safely

Instead of painting on the original ornaments, add a Hue/Saturation or Color Balance adjustment layer and clip it to the decoration layer or group. This lets you shift gold to rose gold, or maroon to teal, and undo it at any time. Keep the palette consistent across all spreads of the album.

6. Proof the spread

Zoom to 100% and scroll across the whole sheet. Look for photos that do not fully cover their frame, soft or noisy images, text too close to the fold and stray layers left visible. Turn off any 'guide' or 'sample text' layers the template designer left in the file.

7. Export for print

Save the layered PSD first (File > Save As) so you can make client changes later. Then use File > Save a Copy and choose JPEG at quality 10 to 12, or the format your lab asks for. Most Indian digital labs print from sRGB JPG files; convert with Edit > Convert to Profile if your file is in another profile. Name files in page order (01.jpg, 02.jpg …) so the lab binds the album correctly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Resizing the canvas after placing photos, which blurs everything.
  • Leaving faces on the centre fold, where the binding swallows them.
  • Using five different fonts in one album.
  • Sending CMYK files to a lab that expects RGB, which dulls colours.

With a clean workflow, a 30-sheet album built from templates takes a fraction of the time of designing from scratch, and the quality stays consistent from the first spread to the last.
