12x36 Album Size Guide: Pixels, DPI and Print Settings

12x36 inches is the most popular wedding album spread size in India. When the book is closed each page is 12x18 inches; opened flat, the two pages form one 12x36 panoramic sheet. This guide explains the pixel sizes, DPI choices and print settings that matter when you design or edit a 12x36 album.

Pixel dimensions at common resolutions

Pixels are simply inches multiplied by DPI (dots per inch):

  • 300 DPI: 10800 x 3600 pixels. The safest choice for sharp prints.
  • 250 DPI: 9000 x 3000 pixels.
  • 200 DPI: 7200 x 2400 pixels. Accepted by many labs for photo-printed albums.
  • 150 DPI: 5400 x 1800 pixels. Lowest that most labs will accept; fine detail may soften.

Every design page on PSD Album shows the exact pixel size and DPI of the file, so you can calculate the print size before downloading: divide pixels by DPI. For example, 10800 / 300 = 36 inches.

Which DPI should you use?

Albums are viewed at arm's length, so 300 DPI is generous and 200 to 250 DPI is usually indistinguishable in print. The real limit is your photos: a 24-megapixel camera image is about 6000 x 4000 pixels, which can cover a 20 x 13 inch area at 300 DPI. If you place a cropped phone photo into a large frame, it will look soft no matter what DPI the template uses. Higher DPI also means bigger files; a layered 12x36 PSD at 300 DPI can be several hundred megabytes, so make sure your computer has enough RAM (16 GB is comfortable).

Bleed, trim and the centre fold

Labs trim a little from every edge after printing, so keep at least 0.25 inch (75 pixels at 300 DPI) of 'bleed' where background artwork continues but nothing important sits. Keep faces and text a further 0.25 inch inside that. The fold at 18 inches is the most dangerous place on the sheet; in lay-flat albums it is mostly visible, but in thicker books the binding hides a small strip. Never put a face or a name across the fold.

Colour settings

Most Indian digital labs print photo albums on photographic paper using RGB workflows and want sRGB JPG files. Do not convert to CMYK unless the lab specifically asks; CMYK conversion often makes reds, maroons and golds look flat. Ask whether the lab applies its own colour correction, and if you have a calibrated monitor, soft-proof with the lab's profile.

12x36 vs other sizes

  • 12x30: a slightly shorter panorama (9000 x 3600 px at 300 DPI) that many labs print at lower cost.
  • 12x18: compact sheets and covers; also the closed size of a 12x36 album.
  • 18x24: large-format premium albums with fewer, bigger photos.
  • 14x40: an even wider panorama some premium labs offer; check that your templates are built for it rather than stretching a 12x36 file.

Export checklist

  • Image Size shows the size your lab asked for.
  • Colour profile is sRGB unless the lab says otherwise.
  • No faces or text in the bleed or across the fold.
  • Flattened JPG at maximum quality, named in page order.
  • Layered PSD archived for reprints.
