12x36 vs 14x40 Album Size: Which Is Better?
14x40 is a larger panoramic album format offered by some labs as a premium option above the usual 12x36. If a client asks for 'the biggest album', you need to know what changes when you move up a size, both for the book and for your design work.
Size and pixel dimensions
- 12x36: closed page 12x18 inches; at 300 DPI a spread is 10800 x 3600 pixels.
- 14x40: closed page 14x20 inches; at 300 DPI a spread is 12000 x 4200 pixels.
The aspect ratios are close (3:1 versus about 2.86:1), so 14x40 is slightly taller relative to its width. A 14x40 spread at 300 DPI has about 30 percent more pixels than a 12x36 spread.
What the bigger size gives you
A 14x40 album has a strong presence on a table and lets hero photos print noticeably larger. It suits couples who want a showpiece album and studios that shoot with high-resolution cameras. The extra height is useful for full-length portraits of the couple in traditional outfits.
What it costs you
- Price: labs charge more for larger sheets and larger covers. Get the current rate card from your lab.
- Weight and handling: a 14x40 album with many thick pages is heavy; consider the number of sheets.
- Photo quality: hero photos need more pixels. A photo that looks fine across half a 12x36 spread may look soft across half a 14x40 spread. Check scale percentages before you commit.
- File size and speed: larger layered PSDs need more RAM and storage.
Can you convert 12x36 designs to 14x40?
Not by simply scaling. Because the proportions differ, scaling a 12x36 sheet to 14 inches tall makes it about 42 inches wide, which is too wide, and scaling to 40 inches wide leaves it too short. The correct approach is to start with a 14x40 canvas and either use templates built for that size or rearrange your 12x36 layout on the new canvas, extending backgrounds and repositioning frames. Templates for each size
Most free templates, including the majority on PSD Album, are made at 12x36 proportions because that is the most popular size. Check the pixel dimensions on each design page; if you work in 14x40 regularly, build a set of base canvases at 12000 x 4200 pixels and adapt layouts from the 12x36 wedding album collection onto them.
Which should you recommend?
- For most weddings, 12x36 is the sensible default: widely available, familiar to clients and well supported by templates.
- Offer 14x40 as a premium upgrade for clients who value a large showpiece and when your photos have the resolution to justify it.
- For parent albums and smaller events, go smaller rather than larger: 12x30 or 12x18.
