Colour Correction Tips for Wedding Album Photos
Clients may not know the word 'colour cast', but they immediately notice when the bride's skin looks orange on one page and grey on the next. Consistent colour is one of the main differences between a professional album and an amateur one. These tips focus on practical correction for Indian wedding photos, which mix daylight, tungsten, LED stage lights and coloured decor in a single day.
Fix white balance per lighting situation
Group photos by lighting, not only by event: daylight outdoors, indoor tungsten, mandap with LED, reception stage. Within each group, pick a reference photo with a neutral element (a white shirt, a grey wall, the white of the eyes) and set white balance with the eyedropper in Lightroom or Camera Raw. Sync that setting to the rest of the group, then fine-tune. Working from RAW files gives you far more latitude than JPGs.
Prioritise skin tones
Faces matter more than decor. Indian skin tones vary widely, and the aim is natural warmth, not a uniform orange or a pale, desaturated look. Use the HSL panel to adjust orange and red hue and saturation gently rather than pushing overall saturation. If decor colours fight with skin, use a mask or the colour mixer to adjust only the decor.
Exposure and contrast
Album paper, especially glossy or laminated Karizma pages, prints slightly darker than most screens show. Keep faces well exposed, lift shadows modestly and avoid crushing blacks in dark sarees and suits. Clipped highlights on white outfits look flat in print; pull highlights down until detail returns.
Watch out for coloured stage lights
Reception stages often use magenta, blue or green LEDs. Removing the cast completely can make the photo look unnatural; the goal is believable skin with some of the stage mood left. Reduce the specific colour's saturation, correct skin with a local adjustment brush, and keep the background lighting as atmosphere.
Match photos inside a spread
After placing photos in a template, look at the spread as a whole. Two images taken minutes apart under different lights can look mismatched side by side. In Photoshop, clip a Curves or Color Balance adjustment layer to the odd photo (Alt+Ctrl+G) and match it to its neighbours. Clipping keeps the correction limited to that photo.
Calibrate your screen, and lower its brightness
An uncalibrated laptop at full brightness is the most common cause of dark prints. A hardware calibrator is the best investment; without one, lower screen brightness when editing for print and compare against a print you know is correct. Many labs will print a single test sheet at low cost before you commit to a full album.
Export in sRGB
Most photo-printed albums in India are produced from sRGB JPG files. If you edit in Adobe RGB or ProPhoto, convert to sRGB when exporting album sheets. Read RGB vs CMYK for photo albums for why converting to CMYK usually hurts photo albums.
Quick consistency checklist
- Skin tones look the same person to person and page to page.
- Whites are white, not blue or yellow.
- No page is noticeably darker than its neighbours.
- Decor colours are rich but not glowing or blocky.
- The album was proofed on a calibrated or dimmed screen.
Good colour work makes any template look better. Once your photos are consistent, choose layouts from the Karizma album PSD collection and the spreads will flow naturally.
