How to Edit a PSD File Without Photoshop

Not everyone has Photoshop installed, and sometimes you only need to change a name on an invitation or check a template before buying a subscription. Several free and paid programs can open PSD files. They differ in how well they handle layers, text and effects, so it helps to know what to expect.

Photopea (browser)

Photopea is a free browser-based editor with an interface similar to Photoshop. It opens many PSDs with layers, masks, text and many layer styles intact. It is convenient for quick edits on any computer. Limitations: very large files such as 300 DPI album spreads can be slow in a browser and need plenty of RAM; some advanced features may render differently; and the free version shows ads. Fonts must be available or uploaded.

GIMP (free desktop)

GIMP is a free, open-source editor for Windows, Mac and Linux. It imports PSD layers, but text layers usually become images and adjustment layers, smart objects and some layer styles may not survive. It is better for pixel editing than for adjusting complex templates.

Affinity Photo (paid, one-time purchase)

Affinity Photo opens PSDs with good support for layers and many adjustments and is sold as a one-time purchase rather than a subscription. Check the latest version's PSD compatibility for features you rely on.

What usually breaks

  • Fonts: missing fonts are substituted, changing the look of text.
  • Smart objects: may be flattened or not editable.
  • Adjustment layers and blend modes: may look different.
  • Clipping masks: generally supported in Photopea; behaviour varies elsewhere.

Always compare your result against the template's original preview before printing.

Simple edits that work well

  • Changing names, dates and text when fonts are available.
  • Replacing photos in clipping-mask frames.
  • Hiding or showing decorative layers.
  • Exporting a JPG or PNG.

Tips for album sheets

Album spreads at 300 DPI are large. If a browser editor struggles, close other tabs, use a computer with more RAM, or work on one sheet at a time. Check the exported file's pixel dimensions match the lab's requirement; see photo print sizes in pixels.

When you need Photoshop

For professional album work with heavy retouching, colour correction across many photos, actions and complex templates, Photoshop remains the most reliable option. Our comparison of album design software explains the trade-offs.

Editing on a phone

Phone apps can open some PSD previews, but editing a layered album sheet on a phone is impractical. Use a computer for any file you intend to print.

Try it with a free template

A practical tip: before editing, export a JPG of the untouched template from your chosen editor and compare it side by side with the preview image on the design page. Any difference in fonts, colours or effects shows up immediately, so you know which parts need manual fixing before you spend time on the rest of the design.

Download a free PSD such as a wedding invitation PSD or a 12x18 album sheet, open it in your chosen editor and test a simple edit. Read what a PSD file is if you are new to the format.
