Choosing Fonts for Wedding Album Designs

Typography is a small part of an album, but it is often what makes it look either premium or homemade. Names on the cover, headings for events and short captions all need fonts that are readable in print and consistent across the whole book. Here is how to choose and use them.

Use a pair, not a collection

Pick one display font and one text font for the entire album. The display font is for names and event headings (for example 'Muhurtham' or 'Reception'). The text font is for dates, venues and short captions. Using a different decorative font on every spread is the most common typography mistake; it makes the album feel like unrelated templates stitched together.

Display fonts: script, serif or modern

  • Script fonts suit traditional and romantic albums. Choose ones with clear letterforms and avoid extremely thin strokes; they break up on textured or laminated paper.
  • Elegant serif fonts work well for royal and classic themes, especially in all capitals with generous letter spacing.
  • Modern sans-serif fonts suit pre-wedding, minimal and destination albums.

Test a display font with the actual names. Some scripts look beautiful in samples but create awkward joins with particular letter combinations.

Text fonts should be invisible

The text font should simply be readable: a clean sans-serif or a simple serif at a comfortable size. Captions in albums are read at arm's length; at 300 DPI, a 10 to 12 point size is usually the minimum for comfortable reading. Avoid setting long quotes in script fonts.

Indian language text

Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi and other scripts need fonts that support them properly. Use Unicode fonts that include the script and check that conjuncts and vowel signs render correctly in Photoshop. If a template uses a Latin font for a heading and you type in Tamil, the text may show boxes or fall back to a system font. Proofread Indian language text with someone fluent before printing.

Missing fonts in downloaded templates

When you open a PSD that uses a font you do not have, Photoshop shows a missing-font warning and substitutes a default when you edit the layer. This is normal. Replace it with a font you own that has a similar style. Do not install fonts from untrusted sites; many 'free font' downloads come bundled with unwanted software. Google Fonts and Adobe Fonts (with a Creative Cloud subscription) are reliable sources.

Placement rules

  • Keep names and dates well inside the safe area and away from the centre fold.
  • Place text over calm areas of the photo or background, or add a subtle shadow or panel behind it.
  • Align text to something on the page: the edge of a frame, the centre of a panel, the line of an ornament.
  • Keep the same heading size and position for every event title throughout the album.

Colour and effects

Gold gradients, soft drop shadows and outer glows can help text stand out, but use them lightly. A small, soft shadow at low opacity is usually enough. Heavy bevels and multiple strokes date an album quickly.

Final proofing

Spelling mistakes in names and dates are the most common reason for album reprints. Ask the client to approve all text in writing, check it again at 100% zoom, and rasterise or embed fonts in the final print copy so the lab cannot substitute them. Then pair your fonts with a layout from the wedding album design PSD collection.
