25 Photoshop Shortcuts Every Album Designer Should Know
Album design repeats the same actions hundreds of times: placing photos, clipping them into frames, resizing, zooming and exporting. Learning the right shortcuts is the cheapest way to finish albums faster. These are the Windows shortcuts; on a Mac use Cmd for Ctrl and Option for Alt.
Placing and clipping photos
- Alt+Ctrl+G – create or release a clipping mask (clip the photo into the frame).
- Ctrl+T – Free Transform, to resize and rotate the selected photo. Press Enter to apply, Esc to cancel.
- Shift while transforming – in recent Photoshop versions, scaling keeps proportions by default; holding Shift switches to free scaling.
- Alt+click between two layers in the Layers panel – another way to clip.
- Ctrl+J – duplicate a layer or selection, useful for trying a variation.
Selecting and arranging layers
- Ctrl+click on the canvas with the Move tool – select the layer under the cursor (or enable Auto-Select).
- Ctrl+] and Ctrl+[ – move a layer up or down one position.
- Ctrl+G – group selected layers; Shift+Ctrl+G ungroups.
- Ctrl+E – merge down (use carefully in templates).
- Alt+[ and Alt+] – select the layer below or above.
- / (forward slash) – toggle Lock transparent pixels on the selected layer, handy when recolouring an ornament without painting outside it.
Navigating large sheets
- Ctrl+0 – fit the whole spread on screen.
- Ctrl+1 – view at 100%, the only zoom where you can judge sharpness.
- Space + drag – pan around the sheet.
- H + click and hold – Bird's-eye view: zoom out temporarily, then release where you want to go.
- Tab – hide panels to see the spread cleanly; F cycles screen modes.
Guides and alignment
- Ctrl+R – show rulers, then drag guides for the centre fold and safe area.
- Ctrl+; – show or hide guides.
- Alt+Ctrl+; – lock guides.
- Arrow keys (with Move tool) – nudge by one pixel; Shift+Arrow nudges by ten.
Adjustments and history
- Ctrl+M – Curves; Ctrl+U – Hue/Saturation; Ctrl+B – Color Balance. For non-destructive work, add these as adjustment layers from the Layers panel and clip them.
- Ctrl+Z – undo; recent versions allow multiple undos with repeated Ctrl+Z.
- Ctrl+Alt+Z – step backward in older versions.
Saving and exporting
- Ctrl+S – save the layered PSD regularly.
- Alt+Ctrl+S – Save a Copy, used for flattened print JPGs.
- Alt+Shift+Ctrl+W – Export As, for quick client previews.
Make your own shortcuts
Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts lets you assign keys to menu commands you use often, such as Place Embedded or Convert to Profile. Actions can also be assigned to function keys (F2 to F12). A single key that places, clips and transforms a photo can save several minutes per spread.
Practise on a real template
Shortcuts stick when you use them on real work. Download a layout from the Karizma album PSD collection and design one spread using only the keyboard for these actions. Then read clipping masks explained if any step felt unclear.
