Choosing Paper Finishes for Wedding Albums

The paper and finish of an album change how the photos look and how the album feels in the hand. Clients often choose on touch and appearance, so studios benefit from understanding the main options and showing samples. Availability and names vary by lab; ask your lab which options it offers for each album type.

Photographic paper vs printed press paper

Many premium Indian albums, including Karizma-style albums, are printed on photographic paper, which gives continuous tone and rich colour. Other albums and photo books are printed on digital presses using inks on coated paper. Photographic printing usually gives deeper colours and smoother tones; press printing can be more economical and allows thinner pages.

Common finishes

  • Glossy: rich colours and strong contrast, but reflections and fingerprints show easily.
  • Matte: no glare, a softer, more elegant look; colours appear slightly less punchy.
  • Lustre or semi-matte: a balance between glossy and matte, with a fine texture that hides fingerprints. A popular choice for wedding albums.
  • Metallic or pearl: a subtle shimmer that suits jewellery, gold decor and night shots, but can look unusual on skin tones; show samples first.
  • Textured finishes (canvas, silk, linen-like): add a tactile feel, but fine details and small text can lose sharpness.

Lamination

Laminated pages are common in Karizma albums. Lamination protects prints from moisture and fingerprints and adds rigidity. Gloss lamination increases saturation and glare; matte or velvet lamination reduces glare and feels softer. When designing for laminated pages, avoid very thin fonts and keep important details away from the edges.

Page thickness and binding

Thick, rigid pages allow a lay-flat binding where spreads open fully flat with little visible fold, ideal for panoramic photos across the spread. Thinner pages create a softer, more book-like feel but a more noticeable centre gutter. Design accordingly: with thinner pages, keep faces further from the fold.

How finish affects design

  • Matte and textured finishes reduce contrast, so slightly brighter, crisper images print better.
  • Glossy finishes exaggerate saturation; avoid over-saturating photos in editing.
  • Metallic papers make whites and golds glow; test skin tones before committing a whole album.
  • Small text and thin lines may be lost on textured paper.

Colour profiles and test prints

Labs often provide ICC profiles for their papers. If you have a calibrated monitor, soft-proof with the profile in Photoshop (View > Proof Setup) to preview how colours will shift. A single test sheet on the chosen paper is the most reliable check before printing the full album.

Helping clients choose

Keep sample pages or sample albums with different finishes at the studio. Most clients decide quickly once they can see and touch them. Explain the trade-offs honestly: glossy is vivid but reflective, matte is elegant but softer, lustre is a safe middle ground.
