How Many Photos Should a Wedding Album Have?

There is no single correct number of photos for a wedding album, but there is a correct way to decide it. Too few and the story feels incomplete; too many and every page looks crowded. This guide gives a practical way to plan photo counts for Indian wedding albums, where a single wedding can include several events over multiple days.

Think in spreads, not total photos

Start from the number of sheets the client is paying for, then decide how many photos each spread can carry comfortably. A useful rule of thumb is one hero photo plus two to five supporting photos per spread. Some spreads deserve a single full-width image; others, like family groups, can carry more. So a 30-sheet album usually holds somewhere around 100 to 180 photos, depending on style. This is a design guideline, not an industry statistic; adjust it to your style.

Style changes the count

  • Minimal or editorial albums: fewer, larger photos, often one to three per spread.
  • Traditional albums: more photos per spread, with rows of ritual and family images.
  • Mixed albums: large hero spreads for key moments, denser spreads for rituals and guests.

Discuss the style with the couple before culling, ideally by showing printed sample albums.

Allocate by event

Write down every event and how important it is to the couple. A typical South Indian wedding might include engagement, haldi or mangala snanam, mehendi, the muhurtham, rituals, couple portraits, family groups and the reception. Give the most important events the most spreads, and allow at least one spread for couple portraits and one for details and decor. Our Tamil wedding album page order guide shows a full sequence.

Leave room for family groups

Family group photos are often the most important pages for parents and grandparents. Plan dedicated spreads for them instead of squeezing them between ritual photos, and agree in advance which groups must appear. Missing a relative is a common reason for redesigns.

How to cull to the right number

  • Remove technical failures and near-duplicates.
  • For each moment, keep the single best frame unless the sequence itself tells a story (for example the thali tying).
  • Mark one hero image for every planned spread.
  • Choose supporting images that add something different: a reaction, a detail, a wider view.

When the client wants more photos

If a couple wants many more photos than the sheets allow, offer more sheets, a second album, or a slideshow and online gallery for the rest. Cramming too many photos into each spread makes the album look like a contact sheet.

Templates by photo count

Choose templates that match your counts. A template with eight frames is a poor choice for a spread with three strong photos. Browse the wedding album design PSD collection and note the frame count of each layout; keeping your own library sorted by frame count makes this fast.
