Using AI Tools in Album Design: What Works Today
AI features are now built into tools that album designers already use, and new ones appear frequently. Some genuinely save time; others are better avoided for client albums. This guide looks at practical uses of AI in album work as of today. Features change quickly, so check the current documentation of the tools you use.
Selections and masking
Photoshop's Select Subject, Object Selection and Remove Background features use machine learning to separate people from backgrounds. They are a large time saver for background replacement and studio prints. Always refine edges, especially hair, with Select and Mask, and check the result at 100 percent zoom. Removing distractions
Content-aware tools and generative fill can remove small distractions such as a stray cable, an exit sign or a passer-by. They work best on simple backgrounds. Check carefully for repeated patterns, warped lines and odd textures, which can be very visible in print. Be cautious with generative tools on faces and hands, and avoid changing the meaning of a real moment.
Culling and selection
Some culling software uses AI to group similar shots and flag closed eyes or missed focus. This can speed up the first pass through thousands of photos, but final selection should still be done by a person who understands the story and the family's priorities.
Colour correction
AI-assisted auto adjustments and presets can give a good starting point for exposure and white balance. Skin tones still need careful human review, especially for Indian weddings with mixed lighting. Apply corrections per lighting group and review results before export. Our colour correction tips apply regardless of the tool.
Automatic layouts
Dedicated album software can propose layouts automatically. Treat these as drafts: review each spread for the focal point, the centre fold and frame orientation. See album design software options.
Upscaling
AI upscaling can enlarge a small photo more cleanly than traditional resizing. It can help when a client supplies a low-resolution family photo that must appear in the album. However, it can invent details, especially in faces and text. Use it for small or supporting frames, and compare against the original before printing.
Generating backgrounds and decorations
Generative tools can create textures and backgrounds. Check the tool's licence terms for commercial use, avoid generating images that imitate recognisable artwork or trademarks, and make sure results are high enough resolution for print. Free, layered backgrounds such as our album background PSD collection remain a predictable option.
Ethics and client trust
- Do not alter what happened at an event in a way that misleads; removing a distraction is different from adding people or changing expressions.
- Be transparent with clients if generative edits were used in a significant way.
- Respect privacy; do not upload client photos to online AI services without understanding how data is stored and used.
A sensible approach
Use AI where it removes repetitive work, such as selections, first-pass culling and simple clean-up, and keep human judgement for selection, layout, colour and storytelling. The album is a record of real moments; AI should help you present them, not replace them.
