Album Design Mistakes to Avoid (and How to Fix Them)
Most album complaints are not about the photos. They are about a cut-off face, a misspelt name, a page that looks darker than the rest or a design that feels crowded. These mistakes are common and almost all of them are easy to prevent. Here are the ones album designers see most often, with fixes.
1. Faces on the centre fold
On a 12x36 spread the fold sits at 18 inches. In thicker books the binding hides a strip around it, and even in lay-flat albums a face across the fold looks distorted. Drag a guide to the centre on every sheet and keep faces and names at least half an inch away from it.
2. Ignoring bleed and trim
Labs trim a small amount from each edge. Text or faces placed right at the edge can be cut. Keep at least 0.25 inch of bleed where only background continues, and a further safe margin for important content. Our print-ready PSD checklist covers this step by step.
3. Filling every frame
Templates often have many frames, but you do not have to use them all. Six mediocre photos on a spread look worse than one strong hero image with two supporting shots. Delete or hide frames you cannot fill with good pictures.
4. Too many fonts and styles
Different fonts, ornaments and colour schemes on every page make an album feel like unrelated templates. Pick one font pair and one template family per event. See choosing fonts for wedding albums.
5. Enlarging small photos
Placing a cropped phone photo or a small JPG into a large frame gives soft, blocky prints. Check the Smart Object's scale in the Properties panel; above 100 percent means you are enlarging. Use the original high-resolution file, or put that photo in a smaller frame.
6. Inconsistent colour
Skin tones that change from page to page are very noticeable. Correct photos in batches per lighting situation before design, then fine-tune inside spreads with clipped adjustment layers. Our colour correction tips explain the process.
7. Editing on a bright, uncalibrated screen
Prints that come back too dark are usually the result of editing on a laptop at full brightness. Lower brightness, calibrate if you can, and order a test print before printing a whole album at a new lab.
8. Leftover template elements
Sample text such as 'Your Name Here', hidden sample photos, watermark layers and guide layers sometimes survive into print. Before export, expand every group, delete what you do not need and check the flattened copy at 100 percent zoom.
9. Wrong colour mode
Converting photo album sheets to CMYK usually makes reds, maroons and golds look flat. Most photo-printed albums are produced from sRGB files. Read RGB vs CMYK for photo albums before you change modes.
10. No client approval in writing
Changing the order of events or replacing photos after printing is expensive. Share a low-resolution preview of every spread, ask the client to check names, dates and family members, and get approval in writing before sending files to the lab.
11. Poor file naming
Files named 'final', 'final2' and 'final new' lead to the wrong version being printed. Number sheets in order (01, 02, 03) and keep one Print folder that contains only the approved files.
A habit that prevents most of these
Before export, hide panels with Tab, zoom to fit, and look at each spread for ten seconds as the client would. Then zoom to 100 percent and scan from left to right. Combined with a written checklist, this catches nearly every mistake on this list. When you are ready to design, start with a balanced layout from the wedding album design PSD collection.
