How to Fix ZIP Extraction Errors When Downloading PSDs
Large PSD templates are usually delivered as ZIP files, and a few hundred megabytes is common for 300 DPI album sheets. If extraction fails or the PSD will not open, the cause is almost always an incomplete download or a tool that struggles with large files. This guide explains how to fix the common errors.
Error: 'The archive is corrupt' or 'Unexpected end of archive'
This means the file did not download completely. Check the file size on your computer against the size listed on the design page. If yours is smaller, download again. Tips for large downloads:
- Use a stable Wi-Fi or wired connection rather than mobile data.
- Use a desktop browser such as Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
- Avoid pausing and resuming, and do not close the tab until the download finishes.
- Make sure your drive has enough free space for both the ZIP and the extracted file.
Error: 'Windows cannot complete the extraction'
The built-in Windows extractor sometimes fails on very large archives or long file paths. Try the following:
- Install a well-known free archiver such as 7-Zip and right-click the ZIP > 7-Zip > Extract Here.
- Move the ZIP to a short path such as C:\PSD before extracting, to avoid path length problems.
- Rename the ZIP to a short name without special characters.
Error on Mac: 'Unable to expand'
Archive Utility occasionally fails with large ZIPs. Use The Unarchiver from the Mac App Store, or open Terminal and run the unzip command on the file. Also confirm the download completed fully.
Error: Password requested
PSD Album files do not use passwords. If a ZIP asks for one, it came from another source or the download was redirected. Download again from the design page on psdalbum.in.
The PSD opens but looks wrong
- Missing fonts: Photoshop shows a warning and substitutes fonts. Replace them with similar fonts you own.
- Very slow: large sheets need RAM. Close other programs, increase Photoshop's memory in Preferences > Performance and use an SSD as the scratch disk.
- 'Not a valid Photoshop document': usually an incomplete extraction; extract again with 7-Zip.
- Opens in another app: right-click the PSD > Open with > Adobe Photoshop.
Google Drive messages
Google cannot virus-scan very large files, so Drive shows a warning; choose 'Download anyway'. If Drive says the file has been downloaded too many times, wait a few hours and try again, or add it to your own Drive and download from there. Our guide on how to download PSD files explains these steps.
Phones and tablets
Large PSD ZIPs are difficult to handle on phones. Download on a computer where you have Photoshop installed. If you must use a phone, use a file manager that supports ZIP extraction and transfer the PSD to your computer.
