How to Prepare and Send Album Files to the Printing Lab
A beautifully designed album can still go wrong at the lab if files are the wrong size, in the wrong colour mode or in the wrong order. Labs differ, so their specification sheet always comes first, but the steps below prevent most problems.
Get the lab's specifications
Ask your lab for written specs covering: spread size in pixels, DPI, bleed, safe area, colour profile, file format, file naming and how to send files. Save it with every project. If a spec is unclear, ask before you export.
Export print files
- Flatten a copy or use File > Export > Export As or Save As JPG at maximum or high quality.
- Keep the colour profile as the lab requests, usually sRGB. See RGB vs CMYK for albums.
- Confirm the exact pixel dimensions; see wedding album sizes in India and photo print sizes in pixels.
- Check that the resolution metadata matches the lab's DPI.
Name files clearly
Use a consistent pattern with leading zeros so files sort correctly, for example ClientName_12x36_01.jpg, 02, 03. Include the cover separately with a clear name. Avoid spaces and special characters if the lab asks.
Final visual check
- View each spread at 100 percent around faces and text for sharpness.
- Check the centre fold: no faces or text in the gutter.
- Check edges: nothing important within the bleed or trim area.
- Proofread names and dates on every spread and the cover.
- Look for leftover template placeholder text or hidden layers that became visible.
Our print-ready PSD checklist covers these in detail.
Include an order note
Send a short note or the lab's order form with: client name, album size, sheet count, paper and lamination choice, cover type, quantity and delivery date. Mention special requests such as a parents' copy in a smaller size. See best paper for wedding albums.
Send the files
Labs commonly accept uploads through their own portal, shared drive links or physical media. Compress the folder into a ZIP for easier transfer, check the ZIP opens before sending, and keep a copy of exactly what you sent.
Ask for a proof
For a new lab or an important album, ask for a printed proof sheet or a test spread before the full run. It confirms colour, sharpness and trimming. Calibrated monitors help, but a print proof is the real test; see album colour correction tips.
Keep your archive
Store the layered PSDs, the exported print files and the order note together. Reprints and parent albums are common, and an organised archive saves hours later.
Start your next album
Finally, note down the lab's turnaround time when you place the order and share a realistic delivery date with your client. Building in a few days of buffer for reprints or corrections avoids last-minute pressure if a sheet needs to be fixed.
